The Vegetarian - Han Kang

GBB Review:
The Vegetarian is a deeply unsettling novel, its power lying precisely in the discomfort it creates. Structured as a triptych, the narrative unfolds in three parts, each adopting the perspective of someone close to Yeong-hye: first her husband, then her brother-in-law, and finally her own sister. This narrative choice accentuates the feeling of strangeness and dispossession, as Yeong-hye is never fully in control of her own story.
Han Kang explores the blurred line between madness and fantasy, without ever clearly defining it. Yeong-hye's transformation – her refusal to eat meat, then her desire to become a plant – can be read as a delusion, a poetic metaphor, or an inner truth inaccessible to others.
The simple writing contrasts with its subtle violence: the violence of social norms, of the gaze of loved ones, of a constrained body. Yeong-hye almost never expresses herself directly; she is observed, interpreted, used. Her supposed "madness" then appears as a social construct, born from her radical refusal to conform.
The fantastical offers no reassuring escape. Instead, it acts as a slow dissolution of human identity, a way to disappear to escape an oppressive world. This is what makes the novel both shocking and profoundly sad.

This novel is intended for a mature audience : some scenes, particularly sexual ones, can be especially difficult to read.

A striking, demanding book that seeks neither to please nor to explain, but to evoke feeling – and which leaves a lasting, sometimes uncomfortable impression long after reading.
